Laptop is charging

While you are charging your laptop, and use your laptop to charge other devices like your smartphone, you might have a doubt: Is it worse for my laptop battery compare to while not charging my laptop? Let's break it down into two parts.

While Not Charging

Charging other devices while your laptop is not charging can potentially be more harmful to the laptop's battery, for a few reasons:

  • Increased battery drain: When the laptop is not plugged in and you're charging other devices, the laptop's battery has to power both the laptop itself and the additional devices. This can accelerate battery drain and increase the number of charge cycles, which can shorten the battery's lifespan over time.
  • Higher battery temperature: Draining the battery quickly by charging external devices can cause the laptop battery to heat up. Excessive heat is one of the major factors that can degrade a lithium-ion battery over time, reducing its capacity.

While Charging

In contrast, when the laptop is charging and you are charging other devices, the laptop draws power from the wall outlet rather than solely from its battery. This means the battery isn't being depleted at the same rate, which is generally less stressful on the battery.

That said, it's good to avoid keeping your laptop battery at 100% all the time or allowing it to overheat during charging, as this can also degrade battery health. Balancing charging habits can help prolong the battery's overall life.
