MediaTek won the championship in 2024 Q1 5G phone market, outgrowing Qualcomm
Welcome to Blackview blog.
In a significant shift in the 5G smartphone market, MediaTek has surpassed Qualcomm's Snapdragon as the leading chipset provider. According to the latest data from Omdia, MediaTek's market share in 5G smartphones rose to 29.2% in the first quarter of 2024, up from 22.8% a year earlier. In contrast, Qualcomm's Snapdragon share decreased from 31.2% to 26.5% over the same period. And other brands like Kirin and UniSoC, etc., collectively account for 17% of shipments.
The growth in MediaTek's 5G chipset shipments has been particularly strong, rising by 53% year-over-year to 53 million units in Q1 2024. Snapdragon-powered 5G smartphone shipments, on the other hand, remained relatively stable, increasing only marginally from 47.2 million to 48.3 million units.

This shift is largely attributed to MediaTek's strong performance in the sub-$250 5G smartphone segment, which has been rapidly expanding. Omdia data shows that shipments of 5G phones priced under $250 surged by 62% in Q1 2024, reaching 62.8 million units. MediaTek has emerged as the preferred choice for chipsets in this price-sensitive segment, while Snapdragon maintains its leadership in the mid-range 5G market and Apple dominates the premium tier.
The changing dynamics in the 5G smartphone chipset market underscore MediaTek's growing competitiveness and its ability to capitalize on the increasing demand for affordable 5G devices globally.
