Welcome to Blackview (Retail good but cheap mini PC and laptop) blog. Hope the guide helps.

DDR4 RAM

The short answer is no, you cannot use DDR4 RAM on a motherboard designed specifically for DDR5. Similarly, you also cannot use DDR5 RAM stick in a DDR4 slot. DDR4 and DDR5 are different types of memory, and they have several key differences that make them incompatible with each other.

  • Physical Differences: DDR4 and DDR5 RAM sticks are designed differently. They have different pin layouts and key notches (the small gap in the pins) that prevent them from being inserted into the wrong motherboard slots. This means a DDR4 RAM stick physically won't fit into a DDR5 motherboard slot.
  • Electrical Differences: DDR4 and DDR5 also operate at different voltages. DDR4 uses 1.2 volts, while DDR5 uses 1.1 volts. The memory controller and power delivery systems on a DDR5 motherboard are tailored for DDR5 RAM, so even if you could somehow fit DDR4 into the slot, it wouldn’t function properly due to these electrical differences.
  • Performance and Technology Differences: DDR5 offers higher speeds, more bandwidth, and new technologies that DDR4 does not support. Motherboards designed for DDR5 take full advantage of these features, so using DDR4 would limit the performance and negate the benefits of upgrading to a DDR5 system.

Conclusion

If you have a DDR5 motherboard, you will need DDR5 RAM. Make sure to check your motherboard specifications and purchase compatible memory. If you already have DDR4 RAM, you’ll need a motherboard that supports DDR4 to use it.
